Painting is my gateway to a state of flow—a meditative space where creative energy moves freely and the magic of transformation begins. With over four decades of experience in oils and watercolors, I blend technical mastery with a playful, soulful spirit. From whimsical animal watercolors to expressive celebrity portraits in oil, my work celebrates the beauty of authenticity and the power of presence. My art centers around portraiture, with a deep focus on the eyes—the “windows to the soul.” I’m captivated by the depth and range of human emotion, and the ability to capture one’s essence through a single gaze. Rooted in the timeless elegance of the Old Masters and inspired by the non-duality of Zen philosophy, my art explores what it means to be human in an age of rapid technological evolution. I’m fascinated by the dance between resilience and vulnerability, tradition and innovation. Artist Bio
Tatyana Zen is a Ukrainian-born, Laguna Beach-based artist whose work seamlessly bridges classical realism and contemporary expression. With over four decades of experience in oils, watercolors, and mixed media, she weaves a rich tapestry of influences—ranging from the Old Masters to Zen philosophy and pop culture—into portraits that pulse with emotional depth and whimsical watercolors full of charm and vitality. A graduate of the Moscow State University of Design and Technology, Tatyana began her creative journey in fashion and computer programming before fully devoting herself to fine art. Her path included replicating Renaissance masterpieces at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and studying figure painting under acclaimed portraitist Robert Liberace. These formative experiences shaped her distinctive style—marked by refined craftsmanship, evocative imagery, and the inventive use of materials such as coffee, tobacco, gold leaf, and gemstones. Tatyana’s work has earned international recognition and has been featured at the Sawdust Art Festival, Dana Point Art Festival, San Diego Art Walk, and other California venues. Her pieces are exhibited in galleries across Los Angeles and Laguna Beach, and are part of private collections around the world.
